What a blessing! Hooray! In November, we were able to help a deaf/blind client move his stuff to a new home. It was a rainy and foggy day. It took us two days to move his stuff. It was not easy for him to decide which stuff he wanted to keep and which stuff he wanted to get rid of. When we were moving his stuff, we traveled in two cars and a truck that a volunteer helped us with. Now, this deaf/blind client is happy with his new home. He is at an assisted living facility where he is taken care of. This place provides three meals a day plus transportation for him. I am thankful for volunteers for their patience. Please pray for the volunteer and the new resident.  We are all relieved and glad that our client has someone to take good care of him!

Due to frequent delays, we had to cancel our annual Thanksgiving Eve Dinner on Wednesday, November 21. The manager at a restaurant said, “There isn’t enough time to order and prepare food for catering for this dinner.” Two years ago, we ordered the catering service three weeks ahead of time. It went well. We will do better pre planning for the next Thanksgiving. Sorry if there was any inconvenience for anyone.

We encourage ourselves to keep working together as a team.

A case manager from Grady Hospital called and asked me if we have a room available for a homeless deaf client after surgery. That was an urgent request. Another homeless deaf client stopped at a Well Fargo Bank and asked for help to find a place to sleep. A staff at Well Fargo called me for an advice on how to find a place for that person to stay.

A deaf client visited us. That person was a very socially isolated person. Hence, that client had a very low communication skill and avoided meeting with any people. We knew that this person really needed to develop better social skills. Nathan and I decided to sit and communicated with that person. We encouraged that client on how to communicate with friends at church, events, and through videophone and emails. We chatted with that person for about four hours. Nathan was surprised to see how poor that person communicated. Example: that person repeated the same sentence for like six or eight times. We supported and encouraged that person to get involved in social activities which would improve this person’s communication skills.

We like to share verses with you. These verses give us inspiration to serve and help others. Amen!

 "And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me." (Matthew 25: 40,45)

Please pray that the Lord will provide a place for HHD with an office, an emergency shelter and some rooms for classes.

Helping Hands for the Deaf (HHD)

HHD update

 Thank you for volunteering to raise funds for HHD at the picnic. The picnic was fun and we had people all ages different ethnicity. It was a great time for everyone. The location was perfect and the weather was perfect and we met a lot of new people ready to volunteer for HHD.We even had some Deaf Girl Scouts there. (see more pictures from the picnic)

Also, HHD appreciated that you took your time to support, sell tickets and collect donations for HHD in August. It was for the "Back To School Charity Day."

Today is the first day of October! It means that we will sell tickets and raise funds for the charity, Helping Hands for the Deaf. Once again, HHD needs volunteers to make it a success! Can you help HHD by selling tickets? Please contact Susan Holly or Meskel Crowe. Inform us when and where you can sell tickets.

One again, thank you for making HHD a success! It has benefited many clients and our community!
Remember the story about the sticks? A single stick may break easily. However, many sticks bound together become stronger.

Come to our "Picnic in the Park" 9/15

HHD will be having a "Picnic in the Park" September 15th at in Stockbridge, Georgia.

The picnic will be at Clark Park, 111 Davis Road, Stockbridge, Georgia at Pavilion C.

We'll have hamburger and hot dog meals with a side item, drink, and dessert for a $6-$8 donation to HHD.

Come hike, bike, walk, or hang out with us that day! We'll be giving away some door prizes and having fun together.

Reap What You Sow

I would like to share my short story with you. I reminisced about what my dad said to me, “I
know you will help other people who need help and other country, too (after I became deaf).”
My respond was, “Dad, how do you know?” He said, “I can see that your heart is bigger than
yourself.”

When I was young, I gave my leftover food to a homeless man often. One day, a man came
back and asked for food at our house. My mom said, “Sorry! There is no more left-over food for
you.” Somehow, I happened to be eating and looked up to my mom. I was lipreading mom
while she was talking to that man. Then he walked away. I stood up and ran with my unfinished
delicious food on the dish to that man at the gate outside. I yelled out to him, “Come! Here is
food for you.”

That’s how my dad learned about me. I wish I could see him often before he passed away. I still
miss him…. I try to make my long story short.

In Stockbridge, my husband, my son and I drove by the woman standing on the corner with five
children holding the sign. Her sign said, “We are evicted. Need a home. Please help.” I saw that
single hearing woman with 5 kids on the street. They are homeless! I asked my husband,
“Please go back there.” I asked them while my son was speaking to them for me,” How can I
help you?” A homeless woman said, “We need a place to stay and we need food.” My answer
was, “I don’t have a place and food for you, but I have resources where I can refer you to.” I
gave her my office phone number and tract, so she can contact me for help. The Lord led me to
not only serving the deaf community, but helping hearing homeless people, too. They come in
all walks of life. They are precious in the sight of the Lord.

I participated in His Name Food Pantry as a volunteer with Donna, CEO for more than three
years when my children were growing up in the elementary school. Then I founded the Helping
Hands for the Deaf (HHD) organization. I also shared the bible study and prayers with deaf
female inmates for 10 years, and I had been involved ministry since 1986. That was a great
experience and opportunity to help one other.

If you have talents to help raise funds by hosting the walk-a-thon, write for grants, or donate
the building and land to HHD, repair water leaks, remodel (deaf clients) or something like that,
please volunteer for HHD. We all serve the community with God given talents. Please use your
God given talents to help others. In Acts 20:35, Paul quotes Jesus as saying, "It is more blessed
to give than receive." HHD’s goal is to purchase a permanent building with office, education (tutoring how to read and write and teach American Sign Language (ASL)) and temporary
shelters. That’s what God gave me this vision.

A good team is where people work together well. Then HHD will be a success.

Great Chili Cook-off fundraiser

 We had a wonderful Chili Cook-Off at Crusselle-Freeman Church of the Deaf in Atlanta. There were around 60 people including a wonderful diversity of young, old hearing and deaf people. Two participants won the contest! DeeAnn Harmon won one with her White Chili, and Juanice Griffin won the second one with her yummy Chili Soup. Meskel gave a great presentation about HHD’s successful endeavors and the need for all of us to work together as one team. We gave prizes to the contestants and we had a fun auction.

Our next fundraiser is to sell Belk Charity Sale tickets. We can assign one hearing volunteer and one deaf volunteer to work together or two deaf volunteers to work together to sell tickets as soon as possible. HHD encourages volunteers to buy a t-shirt with HHD on it and sell tickets with the HHD shirt on. However, it is not required. Then on May 5^th, we need volunteers to represent HHD at the various stores.
