Deaf people need HHD to find an affordable place to live, to learn how to live independently, find employment, learn how to live better lives and serve the community. HHD is for serving the community.
Many non-profit and for-profit organizations help homeless people regardless of race, religion, gender, education, income, etc., but not many people with disabilities. Additionally, homeless deaf people may be the most marginalized people in our society, which may be due to communication barriers, and their relatively low numbers. The deaf and homeless are truly a forgotten people.
There is a lack of deaf awareness and understanding among hearing communities which hampers future developments in services for deaf clients. By empowering deaf people, our staff at HHD will continue to engage with deaf clients, promote their right to be consulted, and value their contribution in service development to better serve all deaf people. HHD understands that deaf people will lead a more rewarding life and make invaluable contributions to the broader society, with the proper assistance.
Our Recent Success Stories
- HHD found an affordable apartment for a deaf woman to live in, and separately an affordable home for another deaf woman. We were able to provide proof of low income and deafness, where necessary, and help both clients move their belongings into their residences.
- HHD helped a deaf woman lower her monthly utility bills, as well as a deaf couple renegotiate their mortgage payments. Now, the woman, and the deaf couple are living more comfortably and able to better pay their living costs.
- Our HHD staff helped a married couple improve their credit rating, and as a result, the couple is no longer burdened with very large payments to their lawyer who was supposed to fix their credit rating. The couple is now more comfortable in paying their rent and utility bills, and other living expenses.
- HHD friends and staff hosted a baby shower for a pregnant single mom and provided her all the needed supplies for her baby.
- HHD also found a place to live at a rehabilitation center for a lady who was released from prison.
Please understand that these deaf individuals have not had the opportunities of a good education because of their communication challenges, and are often neglected and misunderstood. Our leaders are educated deaf people and they understand these challenges. They are excited to educate and train deaf people for independent lives.
Our next fund raising event (The HHD Fundraiser Variety Show) is on Oct 3, 2015, at Henry Baptist Church Gym. We would greatly appreciate anything you could donate for this event, and we would love to advertise your sponsorship! Our goal is to raise $100,000 and purchase our first shelter. HHD is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, and all contributions to HHD are tax deductible. We would love to have you sponsoring us with donations of $100 a month or more.
